Call to Worship

Read the words of this Psalm out loud as an act of praise and an invitation to worship. If you are together with your household, say these words in unison.

Psalm 92:1-4, 12-15

1 It is good to praise the LORD

and make music to your name, O Most High,

2 proclaiming your love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

3 to the music of the ten-stringed lyre

and the melody of the harp.

4 For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD;

I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,

they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;

13 planted in the house of the LORD,

they will flourish in the courts of our God.

14 They will still bear fruit in old age,

they will stay fresh and green,

15 proclaiming, “The LORD is upright;

he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him. ”

Prayer

Someone may pray this prayer:

O God, we meet this morning as persons who need your forgiveness, seek your love, celebrate your grace. You recognize the frailties of our faith, the buckling-under to injustices, and the adopting of beliefs more convenient than compelling. Almighty God, forgive us, and remind us of the delicate beauty of self-giving, in the strong name of Jesus Christ, Teacher and Saviour. Amen.

Beautiful One

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21

Ask someone with you to read aloud this passage from 2 Corinthians:

14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Call to Worship

Read the words of this Psalm out loud as an act of praise and an invitation to worship. If you are together with your household, say these words in unison.

Psalm 147:1-12, 21c

1 Praise the LORD.

How good it is to sing praises to our God,

how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem;

he gathers the exiles of Israel.

3 He heals the brokenhearted

and binds up their wounds.

4 He determines the number of the stars

and calls them each by name.

5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;

his understanding has no limit.

6 The LORD sustains the humble

but casts the wicked to the ground.

7 Sing to the LORD with grateful praise;

make music to our God on the harp.

8 He covers the sky with clouds;

he supplies the earth with rain

and makes grass grow on the hills.

9 He provides food for the cattle

and for the young ravens when they call.

10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,

nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;

11 the LORD delights in those who fear him,

who put their hope in his unfailing love.

12 Extol the LORD, Jerusalem;

praise your God, Zion.

…20 Praise the LORD.

Prayer

Someone may pray this prayer:

God of grace, you have given us minds to know you, hearts to love you, and voices to sing your praise. Fill us with your Spirit, that we may celebrate your glory and worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Open Up The Heavens

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31 (NIV)

Ask someone with you to read aloud this passage from Isaiah:

Isaiah 40:21-31

21 Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

Has it not been told you from the beginning?

Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,

and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,

and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

23 He brings princes to naught

and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

24 No sooner are they planted,

no sooner are they sown,

no sooner do they take root in the ground,

than he blows on them and they wither,

and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

25 “To whom will you compare me?

Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:

Who created all these?

He who brings out the starry host one by one

and calls forth each of them by name.

Because of his great power and mighty strength,

not one of them is missing.

27 Why do you complain, Jacob?

Why do you say, Israel,

“My way is hidden from the LORD;

my cause is disregarded by my God”?

28 Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

The LORD is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary,

and his understanding no one can fathom.

29 He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

30 Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the LORD

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

Call to Worship

Read the words of this Psalm out loud as an act of praise and an invitation to worship. If you are together with your household, say these words in unison.

Psalm 96

1 Sing to the LORD a new song;

sing to the LORD, all the earth.

2 Sing to the LORD, praise his name;

proclaim his salvation day after day.

3 Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

4 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;

he is to be feared above all gods.

5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,

but the LORD made the heavens.

6 Splendor and majesty are before him;

strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

7 Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

bring an offering and come into his courts.

9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness;

tremble before him, all the earth.

10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns. ”

The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;

he will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;

let the sea resound, and all that is in it.

12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;

let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

13 Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes,

he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Prayer

God of grace, you have given us minds to know you, hearts to love you, and voices to sing your praise. Fill us with your Spirit, that we may celebrate your glory and worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessed Be Your Name

Prayer

Take a few moments to reflect on your week:

  • Where did you sense God’s presence? Where did you see God at work?

- Give thanks

  • Where did you sense God’s absence?

- Be still. (Confess, if needed.)

  • Did you struggle with doubt?

- This is not a problem for God. Talk him about it. Ask him for what you seek.

Pray:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

Do You Ever Feel Like A "Zero"?

Scripture Reading: Mark 2:18-22 (NIV)

Ask someone with you to read this passage of scripture.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

2 Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs.

3 Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his;

5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Are You Feeling Empty?

Scripture Reading: Mark 2:1-17 (NIV)

Ask someone with you to read this passage of scripture.

1 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Call to Worship

Psalm 95:1-7

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;

let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving

and extol him with music and song.

3 For the LORD is the great God,

the great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the depths of the earth,

and the mountain peaks belong to him.

5 The sea is his, for he made it,

and his hands formed the dry land.

6 Come, let us bow down in worship,

let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;

7 for he is our God

and we are the people of his pasture,

the flock under his care.

Prayer:

Almighty God, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that we, enlightened by your Word, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Reflective Prayer:

Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24

1 You have searched me, LORD,

and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;

you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;

you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue

you, LORD, know it completely.

5 You hem me in behind and before,

and you lay your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,”

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

Take a few moments to pause in quiet reflection and prayer. Where did you experience the nearness of God? Where did you experience God’s absence? Bring these moments to God with confession and thanksgiving.

Then pray:

Great and good God,

give us pure hearts that we may see you,

humble hearts that we may hear you,

hearts of love that we may serve you,

hearts of faith that we may live in you,

reverent hearts that we may worship you,

here and in the world out there,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Call to Worship

Psalm 29

A psalm of David

1 Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings;

honor the Lord for his glory and strength.

2 Honor the Lord for the glory of his name.

Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea.

The God of glory thunders.

The Lord thunders over the mighty sea.

4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;

the voice of the Lord is majestic.

5 The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars;

the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes Lebanon’s mountains skip like a calf;

he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord strikes

with bolts of lightning.

8 The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake;

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks

and strips the forests bare.

In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”

10 The Lord rules over the floodwaters.

The Lord reigns as king forever.

11 The Lord gives his people strength.

The Lord blesses them with peace.

May we come to worship the Lord who reigns as king forever; the One who strengthens His people!

Prayer

Prayer of Confession

Take a moment to reflect back on the week, on those times that you were distracted or diverted from following Jesus. When you are ready, pray the following:

God forgives and heals us. We need your healing, merciful God: give us true repentance. Some sins are plain to us; some escape us; some we cannot face. Forgive us; set us free to hear your word to us; set us free to serve you. Amen.

Words of Assurance: Isaiah 43:1-7

As you read the first part of Isaiah 43 know that you are forgiven and loved.

The Savior of Israel

43 But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you.

O Israel, the one who formed you says,

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.

I have called you by name; you are mine.

2 When you go through deep waters,

I will be with you.

When you go through rivers of difficulty,

you will not drown.

When you walk through the fire of oppression,

you will not be burned up;

the flames will not consume you.

3 For I am the Lord, your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom;

I gave Ethiopia and Seba in your place.

4 Others were given in exchange for you.

I traded their lives for yours

because you are precious to me.

You are honored, and I love you.

5 “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.

I will gather you and your children from east and west.

6 I will say to the north and south,

‘Bring my sons and daughters back to Israel

from the distant corners of the earth.

7 Bring all who claim me as their God,

for I have made them for my glory.

It was I who created them.’”

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:

4 Forgive us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’”

Welcome to worship today, may you come knowing that Jesus was sent for you!

Call to Worship

Colossians 3:12-17

"As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

As we come together to worship, may everything we do bring praise and thanksgiving

to God the Father through Jesus Christ!

Revelation 21:3-5 (MSG)

"I heard a voice thunder from the Throne: “Look! Look! God has moved into the neighborhood, making his home with men and women! They’re his people, he’s their God. He’ll wipe every tear from their eyes. Death is gone for good—tears gone, crying gone, pain gone—all the first order of things gone.” The Enthroned continued, “Look! I’m making everything new. Write it all down—each word dependable and accurate.”

Dear God, Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you've allowed into our lives this past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you and rely on your presence filling us every single day. We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year.

Scripture

Isaiah 60:1-6

Arise, shine; for your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

2 For darkness shall cover the earth,

and thick darkness the peoples;

but the Lord will arise upon you,

and his glory will appear over you.

3 Nations shall come to your light,

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

4 Lift up your eyes and look around;

they all gather together, they come to you;

your sons shall come from far away,

and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms.

5 Then you shall see and be radiant;

your heart shall thrill and rejoice,[a]

because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you,

the wealth of the nations shall come to you.

6 A multitude of camels shall cover you,

the young camels of Midian and Ephah;

all those from Sheba shall come.

They shall bring gold and frankincense,

and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

Matthew 2:1-12

"In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler

who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road."

God the Helper of the Needy

1 Praise the Lord!

Praise, O servants of the Lord;

praise the name of the Lord.

2 Blessed be the name of the Lord

from this time on and forevermore.

3 From the rising of the sun to its setting

the name of the Lord is to be praised.

4 The Lord is high above all nations,

5 Who is like the Lord our God,

who is seated on high,

6 who looks far down

on the heavens and the earth?

7 He raises the poor from the dust,

and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8 to make them sit with princes,

with the princes of his people.

9 He gives the barren woman a home,

making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the Lord!

Read through Psalm 97 once or twice; pay attention to what stands out to you.

What is it that God’s invitation to you today?

Psalm 97

The Glory of God’s Reign

1 The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice;

let the many coastlands be glad!

2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;

righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3 Fire goes before him,

and consumes his adversaries on every side.

4 His lightnings light up the world;

the earth sees and trembles.

5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,

before the Lord of all the earth.

6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness;

and all the peoples behold his glory.

7 All worshipers of images are put to shame,

those who make their boast in worthless idols;

all gods bow down before him.

8 Zion hears and is glad,

and the towns[a] of Judah rejoice,

because of your judgments, O God.

9 For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth;

you are exalted far above all gods.

10 The Lord loves those who hate[b] evil;

he guards the lives of his faithful;

he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.

11 Light dawns[c] for the righteous,

and joy for the upright in heart.

12 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,

and give thanks to his holy name

After some time of reflecting and meditation on Psalm 97, close with these words:

Restore us, O Lord, and may we live in the presence of your love and your belonging. Let your light shine in and through us. May each of us heed your call to belong with you through Jesus Christ – bold, grace-filled, and in full awareness of who you are: God with us!

Amen

Scripture

John 1:1-14

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

1 John 4:7-12

7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Benediction

May we find strength and courage to look around, observe what God has done and is doing, and enter fully into the reality of God with us. May we surrender to our God, embracing the One to whom we are called to belong.

The Third Sunday of Advent: JOY

Greetings!

Welcome to our service today, thank you for joining us.

Take time to reach out to someone that’s on your heart today.

Call to Worship

Psalm 146

Praise for God’s Help

1 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord, O my soul!

2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

3 Do not put your trust in princes,

in mortals, in whom there is no help.

4 When their breath departs, they return to the earth;

on that very day their plans perish.

5 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord their God,

6 who made heaven and earth,

the sea, and all that is in them;

who keeps faith forever;

7 who executes justice for the oppressed;

who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

the Lord loves the righteous.

9 The Lord watches over the strangers;

he upholds the orphan and the widow,

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever,

your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord!

Prayer

Take a comfortable position and posture. Close your eyes if it helps you. Take a few deep breaths in and out. Begin by simply repeating the words of Habakkuk 2:20: “The Lord is in His holy temple, let all the earth keep silent before Him.”

Now, simply keep silence – both outwardly and inwardly. Allow yourself to be still with God. If busy thoughts start to pop into your mind (they always do), gently brush them to the side for the time being. Continue to breathe deeply and keep silence for 2 to 3 minutes. If you find you’ve been drawn off into the noise of thought or if distractions arise, return to the words from Habakkuk 2:20 and to silence.

After some time in silence, pray these words from Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh:

it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell.

Though an army should encamp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid;

And though war should rise up against me, yet I will put my trust in him.

You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face”; your face, Lord, will I seek.

You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face”; your face, Lord, will I seek.

Amen.

Scripture Reading - read by Alena, Taylor, and Andy

Psalm 148

Praise for God’s Universal Glory

1 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens;

praise him in the heights!

2 Praise him, all his angels;

praise him, all his host!

3 Praise him, sun and moon;

praise him, all you shining stars!

4 Praise him, you highest heavens,

and you waters above the heavens!

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,

for he commanded and they were created.

6 He established them forever and ever;

he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.[a]

7 Praise the Lord from the earth,

you sea monsters and all deeps,

8 fire and hail, snow and frost,

stormy wind fulfilling his command!

9 Mountains and all hills,

fruit trees and all cedars!

10 Wild animals and all cattle,

creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,

princes and all rulers of the earth!

12 Young men and women alike,

old and young together!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,

for his name alone is exalted;

his glory is above earth and heaven.

14 He has raised up a horn for his people,

praise for all his faithful,

for the people of Israel who are close to him.

Praise the Lord!

Song in Closing

Benediction

Be people of joy.

Let joy live in your heart and share the joy of Christ with all you meet.

Share joy by seeing the good in each other.

Share joy by remembering good times and hoping for good times to come.

Share joy by praying for our world.

In this Advent season, we need to see, feel, and share joy.

As you go out into the wonder of God’s creations, share joy, peace, and hope with those you meet.

Amen.

The Second Sunday of Advent: PEACE

Today, let us share in this greeting from the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians:

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Take a moment to reach out to someone that has been on your heart and mind; offering words of hope and encouragement. In this season of Advent, let us eagerly look forward to the arrival of our Saviour, the one who brings hope, peace, joy and love that we can share that with one another.

CALL TO WORSHIP - Pastor Sean Dyck

Isaiah 11:1-10

The Peaceful Kingdom

1 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,

and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,

the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of counsel and might,

the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,

or decide by what his ears hear;

4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,

and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,

and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

6 The wolf shall live with the lamb,

the leopard shall lie down with the kid,

the calf and the lion and the fatling together,

and a little child shall lead them.

7 The cow and the bear shall graze,

their young shall lie down together;

and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,

and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.

9 They will not hurt or destroy

on all my holy mountain;

for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord

as the waters cover the sea.

10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

WORSHIP THROUGH SONG

PRAYER

Use Psalm 85 to guide your prayer today.

Psalm 85

1 Lord, you were favorable to your land;

you restored the fortunes of Jacob.

2 You forgave the iniquity of your people;

you pardoned all their sin. Selah

This word “Selah” can mean to take a pause, to think about what you just heard and let it sink in. Take this moment to confess the times you missed the mark this week. When you are ready, continue to pray through Psalm 85. Pay attention to what stands out to you or what God is saying to you today through His word.

3 You withdrew all your wrath;

you turned from your hot anger.

4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation,

and put away your indignation toward us.

5 Will you be angry with us forever?

Will you prolong your anger to all generations?

6 Will you not revive us again,

so that your people may rejoice in you?

7 Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,

and grant us your salvation.

8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,

for he will speak peace to his people,

to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.

9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;

righteousness and peace will kiss each other.

11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,

and righteousness will look down from the sky.

12 The Lord will give what is good,

and our land will yield its increase.

13 Righteousness will go before him,

and will make a path for his steps.

Amen.

SERMON - Beth MacDonald

COMMUNION

** Read the parts below aloud and share in the Lord’s Supper as you are ready.

Pray: God, your steadfast love has been ours for generations. Through Christ, you brought us out of the abyss of death and into the light of eternal love. With joy and thanksgiving, we proclaim our salvation, remembering Christ’s death and resurrection, until he comes again.

As we break bread and share the cup together, may Christ be present with us and may the Spirit bind us together as Christ’s body in this world. Amen.

Words of Institution: “The apostle Paul tells us that on the night on which Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ Paul goes on to tell us that he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Paul then reminds us that whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the death of Jesus until he comes again.

Invitation: “Friends, this is food for the journey to which God has called us. Let our lives be nourished by the Lord himself as we celebrate together at this table.”

** Share in the bread and the cup as you are ready.

Pray: We praise you, eternal God, through Christ your Word made flesh, in the holy and life-giving Spirit now and forever. Amen

The First Sunday of Advent: HOPE

Welcome to the 1st Sunday of Advent! Thank you for joining us today. Reach out to someone today to offer encouragement and words of hope. In this time when we are isolated and distance may we continue to bring light and life to one another through the love of Christ in us.

Call to Worship

Prepare for God’s Arrival (Isaiah 40: 1-5)

“Comfort, oh comfort my people,” says your God.“Speak softly and tenderly to Jerusalem, but also make it very clearThat she has served her sentence, that her sin is taken care of—forgiven!She’s been punished enough and more than enough, and now it’s over and done with.” Thunder in the desert! “Prepare for God’s arrival!Make the road straight and smooth, a highway fit for our God.Fill in the valleys, level off the hills,Smooth out the ruts, clear out the rocks.Then God’s bright glory will shine and everyone will see it. Yes. Just as God has said.”

As we enter into worship today and as we enter into the season of Advent, may we prepare the road fit for God to enter into our world, into our lives, into all the nooks and crannies of our darkness, in order to bring about hope, peace, joy and love.

Pray this aloud, whether by yourself or in your family/group:

O God of eternal love and master of glorious, simple, unexpected gifts for your children, today marks the beginning of our waiting time—our anticipation of a great festival in honor of your decision to save the world through your Son. We cast aside now our feverish pace and open our pressured lives to the first sounds of your promises. Help us to be quiet enough to hear your voice and eager enough to catch every word of grace, love, and peace. In the name of Jesus, whose coming we await. Amen.

Prayer Time

Let us take time to pray together.

Take time to go back over the past week. Move slowly through each day, remembering your comings and goings. What were some of the moments where you felt angry, frustrated, desolate, or sad? What was one moment when you felt far from God or unaware of His presence in your life?

Give those moments of frustration, of pain, of anger, of sorrow to God. Let Him teach you through them and may He begin to lead you down the path of healing and growth.

Confess those moments of being distracted from His presence.

When you are ready, pray:

God of grace and truth, in Jesus Christ you came among us as light shining in darkness. We confess that we have not welcomed the light, or trusted good news to be good. We have closed our eyes to glory in our midst, expecting little and hoping for less. Forgive our doubt and renew our hope, so that we may receive the fullness of your grace and live in the truth of Christ the Lord. Amen.

As you continue to reflect on your week, focus on the moments where you find joy, when you were hopeful, when you were aware of God’s presence in your daily life.

Praise God for these moments and thank God for the times of pain and sorrow, that He was still there even if we didn’t recognize it.

Words of Assurance

1 Timothy 1:15 says, “Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

Know today that you are forgiven, that Jesus came into the world to save all of us that have fallen short of the glory of God.

Praise the Lord, for His love endures forever!

Scripture

Isaiah 61:1-7

The Good News of Deliverance

61 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me;he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes,the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations;they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines;6 but you shall be called priests of the Lord, you shall be named ministers of our God;you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory.7 Because their[a] shame was double, and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot,therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs.

Benediction

May God fill you with hope, joy, and peace. Live by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Psalm 95

A Call to Worship and Obedience

1 O come, let us sing to the Lord;

let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

3 For the Lord is a great God,

and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;

the heights of the mountains are his also.

5 The sea is his, for he made it,

and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

6 O come, let us worship and bow down,

let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

7 For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

O that today you would listen to his voice!

Give yourself two minutes for some quiet and prayer as you ready to hear the scripture and sermon. Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths, in and out. When you are ready, make this prayer your own:

God our Father,

Lord Jesus Christ,

Holy Spirit:

You are the One God.

The God who created me,

the God who has always loved me,

the God who has placed a holy calling on my life.

Make me deeply attentive to Your Words – especially those words that are uniquely for me right here and now.

November 15, 2020

Welcome! Thank you for joining us yet again as we are back to online worship. I encourage you today that before you take part in the rest of the service, call or text someone that has been on your mind and encourage and support them. We have entered back into tighter restrictions and this can be very hard for many people, or perhaps just frustrating that we are here yet again.

May we remember that we have been called to be the church together, in all our messiness, in all our mistakes, in all our brokenness, God still gathers us as His children to give peace and rest, but also so that we can be the body of Christ together. - Pastor Sean Dyck

Call to Worship

Psalm 98

1 O sing to the Lord a new song,

for he has done marvelous things.

His right hand and his holy arm

have gotten him victory.

2 The Lord has made known his victory;

he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.

3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness

to the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the victory of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;

break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,

with the lyre and the sound of melody.

6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn

make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

the world and those who live in it.

8 Let the floods clap their hands;

let the hills sing together for joy

9 at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming

to judge the earth.

Even though we cannot gather together in person at this time, may we still worship together and make a joyful noise to the Lord!

Prayer of Confession

Take a moment to come before God to confess the actions, thoughts, and words that have kept us in the darkness, so that we can come into the light, through the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.

When you are ready, pray these words:

Forgive us, most gracious God, for what we have done to bring pain to your beautiful world: our hard and unkind words, our careless and thoughtless deeds, our lack of compassion and reluctance to render aid when it was in our power to help. Amen.

Words of Assurance

May these words from 1 Peter offer assurance that you are forgiven:

1 Peter 2: 1-10

1 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4 Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5 like living stones, let yourselves be built[a] into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him[b] will not be put to shame.” 7 To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner,” 8 and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,[c] in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Scripture

Psalm 34

Praise for Deliverance from Trouble Of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

1 I will bless the Lord at all times;

his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

let the humble hear and be glad.

3 O magnify the Lord with me,

and let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me,

and delivered me from all my fears.

5 Look to him, and be radiant;

so your[a] faces shall never be ashamed.

6 This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,

and was saved from every trouble.

7 The angel of the Lord encamps

around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 O taste and see that the Lord is good;

happy are those who take refuge in him.

9 O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,

for those who fear him have no want.

10 The young lions suffer want and hunger,

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, O children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 Which of you desires life,

and covets many days to enjoy good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil,

and your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Depart from evil, and do good;

seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers,

to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,

and rescues them from all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,

and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord rescues them from them all.

20 He keeps all their bones;

not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil brings death to the wicked,

and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Welcome!

Greetings

It has been a busy bustling few weeks in many of our lives. Often times those we love and those we are called to live with and toward get left out as the busy builds… Take a couple minutes to reach out to someone on your mind or heart. Call, text, set up a walk or a coffee. Remember that we live life before God together!

Call to Worship

The final words of the Gospel of Matthew are Jesus’ words to his disciples. They are words that remind us of who God is, who we are, and what we are called to be about as his people:

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

**If you are meeting with others, read the following responsively as a prayer and call to worship.

We are here to worship you, God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We bring all that we have and all that we are to this moment of worship, acknowledging your love, grace, and mercy to us.

Accept our worship, our praise, our thanksgiving and our adoration.

Free us from the burden of our sin, and from the lure of those distractions which steal our attention away from You.

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

So that we may experience anew your call to share with all people the good news of Jesus Christ, the One who came to seek and to save the lost among all people. Amen

Prayer

Where have you seen the beauty of the Lord this summer? Take a minute to give thanks.

Where are you fearful and afraid heading into the fall? Take a minute to bring our anxieties to Jesus, asking for his presence and strength.

God,

This was a strange summer, and yet your goodness was all around us. The heat of the days was a welcome gift after a long winter. The beauty of the trees that line our streets, the flowers and produce in our gardens, remind us of the life you gift.

Thank you for your sustaining generosity towards us even when we grumble. Thank you for your blessing even when we have grown quick to bock at your gifts. Be with us as we head into what is known and unknown this Fall. Teach us to trust your goodness and mercy. On our better days, we know they sustain our life. Thank you! Amen.

Scripture

Jeremiah 17:5-8

Thus says the Lord:

Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals

and make mere flesh their strength,

whose hearts turn away from the Lord.

They shall be like a shrub in the desert,

and shall not see when relief comes.

They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness,

in an uninhabited salt land.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

They shall be like a tree planted by water,

sending out its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when heat comes,

and its leaves shall stay green;

in the year of drought it is not anxious,

and it does not cease to bear fruit.

Scripture

2 Peter 3:8-18

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Welcome!

Call to Worship

Praise & Worship

Confession/Assurance

** Take time to pray silently to God, confessing the things that have gotten in the way of following Jesus with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength. Feel free to use the prayer below to help guide you.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

May you trust these words from Isaiah 1:18,

“Come now, let us argue it out says the Lord:

though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow;

though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

Thanksgiving

** Bring any praise items or things that you are thankful for before God. Use the prayer below to help guide you. If you are worshiping with others, have one read the plain print and everyone read the bold print.

Give thanks to the Lord who is good.

God’s love is everlasting.

Come, let us praise God joyfully.

Let us come to God with thanksgiving.

For family, for living together and eating together; for family amusements and family pleasures; we thank you, God.

For your help in times of doubt and sorrow; for healing our diseases; for preserving us in temptation and danger; we thank you, God.

For your Holy Spirit, who guides our steps and brings us gifts of faith and love; who prays in us and prompts our grateful worship; we praise you, God.

Above all, O God, for your Son Jesus Christ, who lived and died and lives again for our salvation; for our hope in him; and for the joy of serving him: we thank you and praise you, eternal God, for your goodness to us. Amen.

Scripture

Proverbs 8:1, 22-36

Galatians 5:16-26

Sermon

Amen.

Benediction

Our benediction for today comes from Jude 24-25:

" Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. "

Have a wonderful week!

Call To Worship

(If you are worshiping with a few people in your home (such as your family), have someone read this passage aloud)

Psalm 111

1 Praise the Lord! I will thank the Lord with all my heart as I meet with his godly people.

2 How amazing are the deeds of the Lord! All who delight in him should ponder them.

3 Everything he does reveals his glory and majesty. His righteousness never fails.

4 He causes us to remember his wonderful works. How gracious and merciful is our Lord!

5 He gives food to those who fear him; he always remembers his covenant.

6 He has shown his great power to his people by giving them the lands of other nations.

7 All he does is just and good, and all his commandments are trustworthy.

8 They are forever true, to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity.

9 He has paid a full ransom for his people. He has guaranteed his covenant with them forever. What a holy, awe-inspiring name he has!

10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom.

Praise him forever!

Worship Through Singing

Confession

Take a moment to look back on this past week and bring to God any distractions or diversions that got in the way of following Jesus.

When ready, pray:

We confess to you, Lord, what we are – we are not the people we like others to think we are; we are afraid to admit even to ourselves what lies in the depths of our souls.

But we do not want to hide our true selves from you. We believe that you know us as we are, and yet you love us. Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge; teach us to respect ourselves for your sake; give us courage to put our trust in your guiding power.

We confess to you, Lord, the unrest of the world, to which we contribute and in which we share.

Forgive us that so many of us are indifferent to the needs of others. Forgive our reliance on weapons of terror, our discrimination against people of different races, and our preoccupation with material standards. And forgive us Christians for being unsure of our good news, and so unready to tell it.

Raise us out of the paralysis of guilt into freedom and energy of forgiven people. And for those who through long habit find forgiveness hard to accept, we ask you to break their bondage and set them free.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

In 1 John 1:9, it says: But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Know that you are forgiven through the love and grace of Christ!

Thanksgiving

(If you have more than one person in your home, have one person read the non-bold parts and read the bold parts together)

Give thanks to the Lord who is good.

God’s love is everlasting.

Come, let us praise God joyfully.

Let us come to God with thanksgiving.

For the good world; for the things great and small, beautiful and awesome; for seen and unseen splendors;

We thank you God!

For friends; for trust and understanding, for counsel and comfort, enabling both intimacy and solitude;

We thank you God!

For the church into which we have been called; for the good news we receive by Word and Sacrament; and for our life together in the Lord;

We praise you God!

Above all, O God, for your Son Jesus Christ, who lived and died and lives again for our salvation; for our hope in him; and for the joy of serving him:

We thank and praise you, eternal God, for your goodness to us, Amen.

Kid's Time

Talk as a family about the ways Jesus was like you. Then talk about the ways we can be like Jesus. What are things that we can we do here and now that Jesus would do if he were here? Make a plan to do something Jesus would do for someone you know this week! If you are going to back to school soon, talk about ways you can be like Jesus at your school!

Jesus prayed for His disciples. Before He was killed and rose again, He gave a special prayer. That prayer was not just for the people gathered around Him, but for all of us, too, and it is a beautiful reminder of the hope and comfort we have in Jesus.

Scripture: John 17:1-10; 20-26

Discuss: How do you pray? What kinds of things do you say, and when do you pray? Do you like it when other people pray for you? What does it mean that Jesus prays for us?

Welcome!

Invitation

At the heart of worship is the desire to meet God. As we seek God in worship, we recognize that He is here and working in our lives. If you are seeking His presence and power, we invite you to join as we worship together, yet apart. God promises that all who seek Him will find Him.

“‘Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord.” ~ Jeremiah 29:12-14

Discuss as a family - Who is the vine? Who is the father? What does the gardener do in the story? What happens if the branch is cut away from the tree or the vine?

Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We need to show good fruit like peace, love, kindness. When we don’t bear any fruit, we get pruned. God reminds us to grow. He nudges us along through our life, encouraging us to produce this fruit. Eventually, branches that don’t produce are clipped away.

We need to be a good vine. We must remain with Jesus and allow him to grow good fruit in us. Love your neighbors. Bring peace wherever you go. Remain in him!

Resource

In preparation for the sermon, please listen and read the following poem below.

I am the Vine - a Sonnet By Malcolm Guite

How might it feel to be part of the vine?Not just to see the vineyard from afarOr even pluck the clusters, press the wine,But to be grafted in, to feel the stirOf inward sap that rises from our root,Himself deep planted in the ground of Love,To feel a leaf unfold a tender shoot,As tendrils curled unfurl, as branches giveA little to the swelling of the grape,In gradual perfection, round and full,To bear within oneself the joy and hopeOf God’s good vintage, till it’s ripe and whole.What might it mean to bide and to abideIn such rich love as makes the poor heart glad?

"Going Fishing" Video Lesson

Discussion Questions:

What does Jesus mean when he says, "You will fish for me?" How could you fish for men in your lives? Why is it important to spread the news of Jesus?

1. Write out the Bible Verse Words on to colorful card stock and cut out the words. 2. Optional Materials: tissue paper squares, glitter, sequins, gems, and confetti and word squares in their water bottles and then place the caps on the bottles, Paper to draw fins. Glue or tape to attach to the fish bottle. Finish with googly eyes or create your own. 3. Play a Bible Verse Review Game: Have your children shake up their bottle fish. On the word go see who can find the words in the Bible verse in order to spell out the verse. The child that finds all the words first wins.

3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me, I was overcome by distress and sorrow.

4 Then I called on the name of the Lord, “Lord, save me!”

5 The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.

6 The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.

7 Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,

9 that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Song of Sending

ChorusO victory in JesusMy Savior foreverHe sought me and bought meWith His redeeming bloodHe loved me ere I knew HimAnd all my love is due HimHe plunged me to victoryBeneath the cleansing flood
Verse 1I heard an old old storyHow a Savior came from gloryHow He gave His life on CalvaryTo save a wretch like meI heard about His groaningOf His precious blood's atoningThen I repented of my sinsAnd won the victory
Verse 2I heard about His healingOf His cleansing pow'r revealingHow He made the lame to walk againAnd caused the blind to seeAnd then I cried dear JesusCome and heal my broken spiritAnd somehow Jesus came and broughtTo me the victory
Verse 3I heard about a mansionHe has built for me in gloryAnd I heard about the streets of goldBeyond the crystal seaAbout the angels singingAnd the old redemption storyAnd some sweet day I'll sing up thereThe song of victory

Verse 1

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross

The emblem of suff'ring and shame

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain

Chorus

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross

Till my trophies at last I lay down

I will cling to the old rugged cross

And exchange it some day for a crown

Verse 2

O the old rugged cross so despised by the world

Has a wondrous attraction for me

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary

Verse 3

In the old rugged cross stained with blood so divine

A wondrous beauty I see

For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died

To pardon and sanctify me

Verse 4

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true

Its shame and reproach gladly bear

Then He'll call me some day to my home far away

Where His glory forever I'll share

O Lord my GodWhen I in awesome wonderConsider all the worldsThy hands have madeI see the starsI hear the rolling thunderThy pow'r thru'outThe universe displayed
Then sings my soulMy Savior God to TheeHow great Thou artHow great Thou artThen sings my soulMy Savior God to TheeHow great Thou artHow great Thou art
When through the woodsAnd forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birdsSing sweetly in the treesWhen I look downFrom lofty mountain grandeurAnd hear the brookAnd feel the gentle breeze
And when I thinkThat God His Son not sparingSent Him to dieI scarce can take it inThat on the crossMy burden gladly bearingHe bled and diedTo take away my sin
When Christ shall comeWith shout of acclamationAnd take me homeWhat joy shall fill my heartThen I shall bowIn humble adorationAnd there proclaimMy God how great Thou art

They come to give thanks to the name of the Lord as the law requires of Israel.
